Jim Shaw: My Mirage Logo #3
This screen print by Jim Shaw belongs to his series My Mirage (1986–91), which consists of approximately 170 stylistically diverse drawings, films, objects, prints, and paintings, all of the same dimensions. My Mirage relates the story of Billy, a white middle-class suburban boy who grows up in postwar America, becoming a drugged-out cult member and eventually a born-again Christian. The individual works in the series use a variety of means to uncover Billy’s complex psychological identity, incorporating references to American comics, graphics, movies, music, and memorabilia of the period. This print, which apes the style of psychedelic rock posters of the 1960s and ’70s, represents Shaw’s profane logo for the entire series.
