Michigan Stories: Mike Kelley and Jim Shaw
This book was published on the occasion of Michigan Stories: Mike Kelley and Jim Shaw at the Eli and Edythe Broad Art Museum at Michigan State University, East Lansing, the first major exhibition of the two lifelong friends and collaborators whose practices found their origins in the state of Michigan. It documents the connections between Kelley (1954–2012) and Shaw (b. 1952), who began working together as students at the University of Michigan in Ann Arbor, placing their multidisciplinary oeuvres in context and exploring how their projects meditate on Midwestern and American culture.
The volume includes copious color reproductions of the exhibited works and source materials, as well as a foreword by the exhibition’s cocurator Marc-Olivier Wahler and three zines, each bound into the book, featuring illustrated essays by Steven L. Bridges and Carla Acevedo-Yates, and a conversation between Shaw and Wahler.
