Henri Matisse: Les Grandes Gouaches Découpées
Issued to promote an exhibition of late gouache paper cut-outs by Henri Matisse at the Musée des Arts Décoratifs, Paris, in 1961, this elegant color poster was printed by Mourlot, the Parisian studio famous for the nearly four hundred lithographs that Picasso produced there between 1945 and 1969. It pictures Matisse’s Le Danseur (The Dancer) (1937–38), a characteristically striking composition in which the titular figure occupies a white ground bounded by blue, taupe, gray, and black shapes.
