Damien Hirst: The Souls
This deluxe-edition catalogue was published by Paul Stolper and Other Criteria in conjunction with the exhibition Damien Hirst: The Souls at Paul Stolper, London, in 2010. The publication includes an original three-color foil block print of a butterfly, signed and numbered by the artist, in an edition of one hundred. It also reproduces all the prints in the series, which depict four different butterflies in eighty different colorways, and includes four foil block inserts that document the range of colors used.
Hirst explains his use of butterflies in terms of “universal triggers: everyone’s frightened of glass, everyone’s frightened of sharks, everyone loves butterflies.” The insects’ representation in The Souls reflects an essential tension between their iridescent vitality and the ultimate stillness of death—a classically Hirstian preoccupation.
