Cy Twombly: The Last Paintings
This book was published on the occasion of the exhibition Cy Twombly: The Last Paintings at Gagosian, Beverly Hills. Featuring the last paintings completed by Twombly, the presentation subsequently traveled to Hong Kong, London, and New York. The bold palettes and exuberant mark making typify the freedom with which Twombly painted, never restricted to a single reference. Even in the face of his impending death, the elegiac power, vivid palette, and ardent gestures of these works pulse with the energies of the new.
The catalogue documents the eight untitled paintings in the exhibition with plates and detail images. It features new essays by Achim Hochdörfer—curator of Cy Twombly: States of Mind at Museum Moderner Kunst Stiftung Ludwig Wien, Vienna (2009)—and curator Julie Sylvester, as well as a photo essay capturing Twombly’s home and studio by Sally Mann.
