Albert Oehlen: Tramonto Spaventoso
This book was published on the occasion of the exhibition Albert Oehlen: Tramonto Spaventoso at Gagosian, Beverly Hills, which brought together recent paintings by Oehlen that interpret, appropriate, and remix visual elements from John Graham’s painting Tramonto Spaventoso (Terrifying Sunset, 1940–49). Expanding on the works exhibited in Albert Oehlen at the Serpentine Galleries, London, in 2019–20, four new monumental paintings in charcoal, acrylic, and fabric complete Oehlen’s interpretation of the Rothko Chapel in Houston.
A companion title to the Serpentine catalogue, this unbound large-format book includes full-bleed artwork reproductions, a foldout poster, and a clear acetate cover featuring a silkscreened drawing by Oehlen. It includes a conversation between Oehlen and curator Mark Godfrey, titled “Graham Rothko Shreds,” in which the pair discuss the Rothko Chapel, John Graham, Leigh Bowery, and the complexities of working at such a large scale.
