Signed and dated by Roy Lichtenstein, as well as by Guggenheim deputy director and senior curator Diane Waldman, this monograph was published on the occasion of a mid-career retrospective of the artist’s work that was organized by Waldman and opened at the Solomon R. Guggenheim Museum, New York, in 1993, and traveled to the Museum of Contemporary Art Los Angeles and the Montreal Museum of Fine Arts the following year. Surveying Lichtenstein’s artistic output since the 1950s, it illuminated his distinctive and influential adaptation of comic-book imagery, echoing of print reproduction, and ushering in of Pop art.

The book contains 350 color reproductions and provides a thorough chronological overview of Lichtenstein’s oeuvre to date, featuring a detailed but accessible text by Waldman that discusses all phases of Lichtenstein’s work, beginning with the early Pop paintings and progressing through the still lifes, interiors, and landscapes. Waldman’s commentary also covers the Brushstroke, Modern, Mirror, and Entablature series, as well as selected sculptures, murals, and public commissions, providing insights into Lichtenstein’s process and situating his practice within an art historical context.
