Roy Lichtenstein: Tremaine Holiday Card (Seascape)
This abstract seascape by Roy Lichtenstein adorns a holiday card commissioned by prominent collectors Emily and Burton Tremaine in 1965. Lichtenstein composed the scene of water, dunes, and sky with silkscreened paper collaged with blue RowLux—a lenticular plastic material with an optical pattern that appears to move as the viewer shifts position. Reconsidering possibilities of contemporary landscape and incorporating new, commercially available materials, this intimately scaled work exemplifies Lichtenstein’s experimental approach of the mid-1960s.
