Richard Serra: Rolled and Forged
This book was published on the occasion of the exhibition Richard Serra: Rolled and Forged at Gagosian, 555 West 24th Street, New York. The five large-scale sculptures it documents respond to the site of their installation and require the viewer’s active movement around and through the space they inhabit. Serra’s rolled, planar works are concerned with division, elevation, and passage, whereas the forged works deal primarily with weight, density, and mass.
The catalogue includes installation photographs of the exhibited sculptures, together with images of formally and conceptually related works from throughout Serra’s career. In an interview with Brooklyn Rail publisher and artistic director Phong Bui, Serra discusses the development, context, and significance of his practice.
