Man Ray: A l’heure de l’observatoire, les Amoureux
This lithograph is based on Man Ray’s iconic Surrealist painting of the same title (which translates as Observatory Time, The Lovers) from 1932–34. Depicting the elongated crimson lips of photographer Lee Miller drifting through the sky above the Paris observatory, the painting was made in response to the ending of the couple’s relationship. Born Emmanuel Radnitzky in 1890, Man Ray was a key figure of Dada and Surrealism who worked in painting, sculpture, video, and printmaking as well as photography, through which he embraced technical experimentation in the form of solarization and “rayography,” his own invention.
