Jonas Wood: Three Clippings (White)
This set of three prints by Jonas Wood emerged from his Clippings series of paintings, in which the artist depicts segments of plants that have been literally clipped or borrowed from his other works. To produce them, he collaborated with the Los Angeles–based printmaker Mixografía, which has developed a proprietary method that uses a cast three-dimensional copper printing plate into which moist cotton paper pulp is inserted. Running the plate through a high-pressure press results in a debossed, colorless print that defines precise perspectival lines and surface details in relief.
Wood has described the process of creating Three Clippings (White), noting: “To make the plates used in the printing process, I slowly cut out shapes of different weighted and textured papers, gluing and layering them on top of one another. This process built a three-dimensional form of my image, which was used to create the reverse of the mold needed to make the plates.”
