Defenestration Suite #8 (2023), a limited-edition photogravure print, hints at the breadth of Christopher Wool’s visual and material strategies. The artist’s approach has evolved over time, as he explores the effects of repetition, layering, and erasure on abstract pattern and stenciled text. By reusing and reworking images and gestures from previous compositions, he creates something new each time, in this instance combining a complex pattern of straight and curling lines with an asemic string of letters, numerals, and punctuation. The improvised marks of Defenestration Suite #8 echo the cursive lines and expressive gestures that characterize Wool’s paintings and sculptures.
