Bruce Nauman: Burning Small Fires
Burning Small Fires (1968) is Bruce Nauman’s exceedingly rare self-published conceptual response to Ed Ruscha’s famous book Various Small Fires and Milk (1964). After ripping out and torching each page of the earlier volume, Nauman photographed and rebound the charred remnants to form a new work. While Ruscha’s images treat burning as essentially neutral, Nauman restores the sense of power that fire then held in the culture of protest. This folio with red- and white-printed card wrappers contains a large folded sheet with reproductions of fifteen photographs.
