Ashley Bickerton: Ornamental Hysteria
This poster featuring Orange Shark (2008) was produced in 2017, in conjunction with Ashley Bickerton: Ornamental Hysteria at Newport Street Gallery, London. This major survey presented work made by Bickerton over a period of three decades, from his “consumerist” wall sculptures of the mid- to late 1980s to the vivid and idiosyncratic mixed-media paintings and sculptures of more recent years.
Orange Shark is one of many sculptures produced by the artist following his relocation to Bali in 1993. In this work, a model shark made of polyurethane resin has been outfitted with a vivid nylon jacket and adorned with coconuts and plastic bags filled with mouthwash and water. The use of marine iconography both reflects Bickerton’s love of the ocean and calls attention to our exploitation of natural resources while implying that the planet will outlast humanity’s disruptive impact.
