Titus Kaphar and Reginald Dwayne Betts: Redaction
A collaboration between artist Titus Kaphar and poet, memoirist, and attorney Reginald Dwayne Betts, this book documents the Redaction series, first presented in 2019 at MoMA PS1, New York. The project confronts the abuses of the criminal justice system, specifically the issue of money bail: those who are arrested but unable to afford bail remain incarcerated even though they have been neither tried nor convicted. Redaction features poetry by Betts that draws upon redacted legal documents and Kaphar’s etched portraits of incarcerated individuals.
Designed in close collaboration with Kaphar and Betts, the book presents the Redaction series along with additional related artworks and poetry. It includes an introduction by Sarah Suzuki, associate director at the Museum of Modern Art, New York, and a reflection by designers Jeremy Mickel and Forest Young on the open-source Redaction font designed for the project.
