Titus Kaphar: Analogous Colors
This edition by Titus Kaphar—an archival inkjet print on aluminum with gouache—is based on his painting Analogous Colors (2020), which was first shown in the exhibition From a Tropical Space at Gagosian, New York, in 2020. In both painting and print, the profile of a child is excised from the image, missing from the mother’s grasp. The painting was featured on the cover of the June 15, 2020, issue of Time magazine, which included a report on the protests sparked by George Floyd’s killing at the hands of Minneapolis police. “In her expression, I see the Black mothers who are unseen, and rendered helpless in this fury against their babies,” wrote Kaphar. “As I listlessly wade through another cycle of violence against black people, I paint a black mother. . . . eyes closed, furrowed brow, holding the contour of her loss.”
