Susan Rothenberg: The Horse Paintings: 1974–1980
This book was published on the occasion of the exhibition Susan Rothenberg: The Horse Paintings: 1974–1980 at Gagosian’s former gallery on West 23rd Street in New York. Silhouettes of horses painted in profile are Rothenberg’s most famous motif, a paring-down of the animal to its most essential totemic form. Painted in gestural brushstrokes of acrylic, tempera, and Flashe, these expansive works fuse abstraction and representation, heralding a return to expressive figuration. Reproducing eight of the paintings in full-color plates, the publication includes a poem by Charles Bukowski.
