Spencer Sweeney: Walk About in Blue
Walk About in Blue is a monotype by Spencer Sweeney that weaves strokes of dilute color into a silhouetted figure. With one arm on her hip, the work’s feminine subject references the nude form ubiquitous in Western art history, its bold stylization verging on the abstract. Echoing the rhythms of improvisational jazz, Sweeney’s image condenses the human body down to its basic components while mirroring the energy and originality of Henri Matisse and Pablo Picasso. Aiming for both creative transparency and psychological truth, it effectively combines gestural application with a more graphic approach. The monotype was produced for a project space conceived in collaboration with Sweeney for Printed Matter’s LA Art Book Fair in 2019.
