Nan Goldin: This Will Not End Well
This book was published on the occasion of Nan Goldin: This Will Not End Well, a retrospective focused on the artist’s work as a filmmaker. Presenting a comprehensive view of Goldin’s slideshows and films composed of thousands of photographs, film sequences, and audio and music tracks, the exhibition was organized by Moderna Museet, Stockholm, before traveling to Stedelijk Museum Amsterdam; Neue Nationalgalerie, Berlin; and Pirelli HangarBicocca, Milan.
The artworks variously address the trauma of Goldin’s family history, the portrayal of her friends, and a journey into the darkness of addiction. The catalogue retains the presentation format of the slideshows and video works, with images reproduced together in sequence on a black ground. Twenty texts—most of them newly commissioned by Goldin—explore the intention, power, and resonance of her work.
