Georg Baselitz: Archinto
This book was published on the occasion of the exhibition Georg Baselitz: Archinto at the Museo di Palazzo Grimani, Venice. It features more than twenty-five new and recent paintings and sculptures by the artist. Here Baselitz pays homage to Venice and its extraordinary artistic tradition, establishing art historical continuity while also signaling a rupture between the Renaissance portrait tradition and its contemporary equivalents. The title of the exhibition alludes to Titian’s enigmatic 1558 portrait of a partially veiled Cardinal Filippo Archinto—now at the Philadelphia Museum of Art in the United States—in which dense brushwork conflates figure and ground. The bilingual (English/Italian) book features texts by Georg Baselitz, Toto Bergamo Rossi and Daniele Ferrara, Mario Codognato, and Ester Coen.
