Baselitz – Academy
This book was published on the occasion of Baselitz – Academy at Gallerie dell’Accademia in Venice, the first exhibition devoted to a living artist at the prestigious institution. The richly illustrated monograph traces the arc of Baselitz’s extraordinary sixty-year career through his relationship with Italy and the academic tradition.
Featuring more than two hundred reproductions, it provides a thorough overview of the artist’s various cycles and stylistic phases. An essay by art historian and curator Kosme de Barañano is accompanied by a conversation with the artist, an introduction by Paolo Marini, and an essay by Michele Tavola, as well as copious full-page plates, archival photographs, and illustrations highlighting Baselitz’s sources and inspirations. Together, they reveal an artist confronting academic genres and painting traditions and reinterpreting them in provocative and sometimes unsettling ways.
