Neil Jenney: American Realism Today
This book was published on the occasion of Neil Jenney: American Realism Today at Gagosian, 976 Madison Avenue, New York. The exhibition featured paintings from the artist’s Modern Africa series (2015–)—a subseries of the New Good Paintings (2015–)—and the preceding series, Good Paintings (1971–2015). The newest works in the exhibition, from Modern Africa, depict monumental architectural fragments half-submerged in undulating sand dunes. Unpeopled but containing hints of human presence such as footprints, these landscapes suggest the conflict between civilization and nature.
Fully illustrated with plates, details, and installation photographs, the catalogue features an essay by Daphne Merkin, a consideration of Jenney’s work by Henry Taylor, and a biography of the artist.
