Gouthière’s Candelabras: Edmund de Waal and Charlotte Vignon
Gouthière’s Candelabras is the third volume in the Frick Diptych Series, which offers fresh insight into a single work from the museum’s collection by pairing an essay written by a Frick curator with a contribution from a contemporary artist or writer. This book focuses on a pair of white vases with gilt-bronze mounts made by Pierre Gouthière, a celebrated eighteenth-century French chaser and gilder. Curator Charlotte Vignon contextualizes Gouthière’s commission within the history of porcelain production, bronze casting, and the culture of France shortly before the Revolution. Her text is complemented by an essay by Edmund de Waal that examines what it is to make, own, and desire such complex objects.
