Ed Ruscha: On the Road: An Artist Book of the Classic Novel by Jack Kerouac
This limited-edition print was produced in 2010 in conjunction with Ed Ruscha: On the Road: An Artist Book of the Classic Novel by Jack Kerouac at Gagosian, Davies Street, London, and Gagosian, 980 Madison Avenue, New York. The exhibition presented Ruscha’s own version of Kerouac’s Beat bible—a leather-bound book that includes the full text accompanied by black-and-white photographic illustrations that refer closely to details from the story.
There are three versions, each with a different quotation by Kerouac and photograph by Ruscha. The text is printed letterpress and the die-cut photograph is added as a tip-in by hand to a blind debossed area of similar shape. One version features a 1949 Hudson Commodore, famously driven by the book’s character based on Neal Cassady; a second pictures a stack of sandwiches on crumpled deli paper; and a third shows a slice of apple pie and ice cream on a diner plate.
