Hao Liang: The Sad Zither
This book was published on the occasion of Hao Liang: The Sad Zither at Gagosian, Grosvenor Hill, London, the first solo exhibition in Europe by the artist. The subtly toned paintings on silk in the exhibition give the methods and motifs of traditional Chinese guohua ink wash painting a contemporary spin. Reflecting on the passage of time and our place in the world, Hao explores themes and symbols from fiction and poetry.
Fully illustrated with color reproductions and details of thirteen works as well as studio photography, the book includes illustrated texts by critic Travis Diehl and poet Zhu Zhu. Quotations by writers who have influenced Hao’s work are also featured throughout the publication, including Dante, Jorge Luis Borges, and Chinese poets Tao Yuanming (c. 365–427 CE), Du Mu (808–852 CE), and Li Shangyin (813–858 CE).
