Repossi/Robert Mapplethorpe: “Relic” Necklace
As part of an ongoing collaboration with the Robert Mapplethorpe Foundation, Paris jewelry house Repossi has created a collection of fine jewelry inspired by the artist’s own handmade jewelry and his early photography.
The Relic necklace is an extreme tribute to Mapplethorpe’s jewelry, which is comprised of “bits of nothing,” as the artist liked to call them: shells, pearls, crab claws, nails, dice, and engine parts. Transposing the artist’s found objects into fine jewelry, it employs both mirrored and “patina” finishes, as well as seven different colors of gold to allude to the spontaneous and sundry qualities of Mapplethorpe’s creations. With a flexible snake chain that evokes the cords Mapplethorpe used in his jewelry designs, the Relic necklace recycles elements from other designs in the Repossi/Robert Mapplethorpe collection—including black diamond pavé beads, the snake chain, and pearl clasp—in a nod to the reclaimed and found materials he used.
The Gagosian Shop is the exclusive retail partner for sixteen pieces of the Repossi/Robert Mapplethorpe collection during the month of May 2022.
