Alaïa: Picasso Tanagra Dress
In this special collection, Pieter Mulier, creative director of Alaïa, pays tribute to Pablo Picasso by imagining six exceptional dresses inspired by Picasso’s original Tanagra ceramics. Modeled after the cast terra-cotta Tanagra figurines of ancient Greece, these works were made by the artist in the late 1940s and early 1950s alongside master potters at the Madoura factory in the South of France. The dresses were produced in partnership with the Picasso Administration in a limited edition, requiring the unique skills of Alaïa’s ateliers.
This look is inspired by Picasso’s 1949 white terra-cotta vase in the shape of a female figure, which was thrown, modeled, and painted with slip in flourishes of classical costume. It is knitted from an exclusive linen and stretch viscose composition and a high-shine viscose is used to replicate the fluidity of the dark brown brushstrokes.
The Tanagra collection was originally presented during the Summer/Fall 2022 collection. The Gagosian Shop is partnering with Alaïa on the pre-release of two dresses from the collection for June and July 2022.
